The road to Threl
A world held together by vow, memory, and song.
Threl is a world where the boundaries between spiritual truth and physical existence have grown perilously thin, and where communities must work together to keep the world from unraveling.
Read the World of Threl setting guide for the wider canon of Anchors, the Fray, Dabar, the Lattice, and the Three Covenants.
The age is marked by the failure of the Grand Monochord during the Great Decoherence. Since that catastrophe, reality no longer feels entirely fixed. Mountains still rise. Rivers still run. Fire still burns. But none of these things are taken for granted.
Dabar: the language beneath the world
At the heart of Threl lies Dabar, an ancient language bound to the structure of existence. Dabar is not ordinary spellcraft. It is a way of engaging with the underlying order of reality—the hidden pattern by which matter, motion, memory, and meaning hold together.
A phrase may reinforce a boundary, preserve a fragile object, guide a living process, or reveal a truth hidden beneath appearances. The greater the change demanded of reality, the greater the resistance and danger. Words are not harmless in Threl.
The places beyond the light
The Anchors: cities that endure
The settled cities of Threl are known as Anchors. They are built around places where the physical and spiritual orders meet in a fragile balance. Their great halls, towers, inscriptions, and rituals help maintain regions in which ordinary laws can continue to function.
The Fray: the unspooled wilds
Beyond the last dependable light lies the Fray. It is not merely a wilderness. It is a region where definitions have weakened and the world has become uncertain. Distance may deceive. Time may fold. Familiar things may take on unfamiliar meanings.
Scarred Nodes and the Green Rot
Where the Great Decoherence tore reality most deeply, it left behind Scarred Nodes—persistent wounds in the world. Their influence may appear as distorted landscapes, impossible echoes, or the growth known as the Green Rot.
Stories waiting on the road
A Threl campaign may begin in a stable city or at the edge of a Scarred Node. Characters may be pilgrims, mercenaries, scholars, clergy, artisans, scouts, exiles, or people who simply have nowhere else to go.
- Explore haunted wilderness.
- Navigate tense city politics.
- Face theological conflict.
- Investigate dangerous discoveries.
- Make difficult moral choices.
- Protect what the world is trying to forget.
The deepest questions are personal: What do you hold onto when the world forgets its own shape? What does faith require when certainty is gone? What would you risk to preserve a single life, a single truth, or a single light?
